Let us Study God’s Word about the term wilderness. Most will immediately think a wild tract of land such as forest or desert, but Biblically it is a much deeper subject. John the Baptist was in the wilderness; we will start in Luke.
Luke 3:
2-6 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.wilderness G2048 eremos (er'-ay-mos) Of uncertain affinity; lonesome, that is, (by implication) waste (usually as a noun, G5561 being implied): - desert, desolate, solitary, wilderness.
Notice in the wilderness there is a voice and it can be lonesome there. Let us go to Isaiah where it is written.
Isa.40:
3-8 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. 6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.Isaiah written about 600 years before John the Baptist was born. The voice said cry this flesh life is temporal, but the Word of God shall stand forever. We can live forever if we absorb His Word.
wilderness H4057 midbar (mid-bawr') From H1696 in the sense of driving; a pasture (that is, open field, whither cattle are driven); by implication a desert; also speech (including its organs): - desert, south, speech, wilderness.
H1696 dabar (daw-bar') A primitive root; perhaps properly to arrange; but used figuratively (of words) to speak; rarely (in a destructive sense) to subdue: - answer, appoint, bid, command, commune, declare, destroy, give, name, promise, pronounce, rehearse, say, speak, be spokesman, subdue, talk, teach, tell, think, use [entreaties], utter, X well, X work.
Notice in the wilderness is pasture where animals can graze, and speech heard. Turn to Leviticus and the day atonement.
Lev.16:
7-10 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.wilderness H4057 midbar
Skip down to verse 21.
Lev.16:
21-22 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: 22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.wilderness H4057 midbar
Notice in the wilderness is sent a scapegoat with all iniquities, transgressions, and sin upon his head. Put there by a fit man and let go. Turn to Isaiah, the name Isaiah meaning "the salvation of Yehovah".
WILDERNESS
Page TwoIsa.14:
12-14 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.God knew what Satan said in his heart, I, I, I, I, and I.
Isa.14:
15-16 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; This is speaking of the future.
Rev.20:
1-3 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Now, Satan is in heaven behind the throne. Christ said, "Get thee behind Me Satan". Satan’s evil spirit still roams the earth.
Isa.14:
17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?wilderness H4057 midbar
Notice the world is a wilderness in which Satan wants all in bondage. We must have faith in God for salvation, for provision not only for food, but spiritual food or manna from heaven. Do not doubt God like the Hebrew children during the Exodus. Turn to Psalms.
Psa.78:
19-25 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? 20 Behold, He smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can He give bread also? can He provide flesh for His people? 21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel; 22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in His salvation: 23 Though He had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, 24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. 25 Man did eat angels' food: He sent them meat to the full.wilderness H4057 midbar
How could they have doubted God? They listened to the wrong voice shouting in the wilderness. Turn to Psalms 95.
Psa.95:
7-8 For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. To day if ye will hear His voice, 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:wilderness H4057 midbar
Yes there was temptation in the wilderness during the Exodus. Today in God’s pasture the wilderness this world, if we will hear His voice, we have nothing to want or fear, for He is our shepherd. Turn to Isaiah again.
Isa.43:18-21 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. 20 The beast of the field shall honour Me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen. 21 This people have I formed for Myself; they shall shew forth My praise.
wilderness H4057 midbar
The beast and unclean animals are provided for. Will not God take care of His chosen in the wilderness?Turn to Revelation.
Rev.12:
7-9 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.War in heaven. Remember the scapegoat put into the wilderness by a fit man.
WILDERNESS

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.Yes Satan behind the throne day and night accusing us all.
Rev.12:
11-13 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. The woman is mother Israel, not just Judah or the state of Israel, all the tribes or even the body of Christ.
Rev.12:
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.wilderness G2048 eremos
Deut.32:
9-11 For the LORD'S portion is His people; Jacob is the lot of His inheritance. 10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:Rev.12:
15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. What comes out of Satan’s mouth, words, speech in the wilderness, a flood of lies, deluge of deception, or overflowing treachery?
Rev.12:
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.God uses nature and is supernatural. Remember the plagues in Egypt before Pharaoh let the Hebrew children go?
Rev.12:
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.Satan enraged with the woman and makes spiritual war with the remnant of her seed. Which. Don’t read over this qualifier, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Who else could that be but the body of Christ, His church?
Turn to Revelation 17.
Rev.17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
Rev.17:
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. The waters are peoples of the earth.
Rev.17:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.People intoxicated with lies.
Rev.17:
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.wilderness G2048 eremos
You guessed it. The whore and the beast are in the wilderness too. A spiritual wilderness, it can be kind of lonesome. Turn to Hosea.
The name Hosea means "Salvation".

14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.wilderness H4057 midbar
God will spiritually woo His bride. The voice speaking in the wilderness, God’s Word.
Hosea 2:
15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.(CB) Achor = trouble.
Hosea 2:
16 And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.(CB) Ishi = My husband.
(CB) Baali = My lord.
Hosea 2:
17 For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.Rev.3:
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My new name.Spiritually married and a new name.
Hosea 2:
18-22 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. 19 And I will betroth thee unto Me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto Me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. 20 I will even betroth thee unto Me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth; 22 And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hear Jezreel.(CB) Jezreel = the seed of God [which He will sow], as stated in v. 23.
Hosea 2:
23 And I will sow her unto Me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not My people, Thou art My people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.(CB) I will sow her: i.e. the new Israel.
(CB) will have mercy, &c. = have pity; i.e. will [call her] Ruhamah.
(CB) her that had not obtained mercy = Lo-Ruhamah (not pitied).
(CB) not My people = Lo-ammi.
(CB) Thou art My people = Ammi [art] thou.
Midbar, our place in the wilderness. Midbar, pasture to be fed God’s Word. Midbar, kind of lonely in a world intoxicated with lies.
Heavenly Father we are thankful for the Word. You furnish a table in the wilderness, waters from the rock. You give bread and provide flesh in the wilderness. You rain down manna to eat in the wilderness, the corn of heaven. You lead us to green pastures in the wilderness and to still waters of peace of mind. Heavenly Father we are thankful in Jesus’ name, amen.
